06.06.2019 Wheat Exports by Country

Worldwide wheat exports by country totaled an estimated US$40.1 billion in 2018, down by -16.2% for all wheat shippers over the five-year period starting in 2014 when global wheat exports were valued at $47.8 billion. Year over year, the value of global wheat exports appreciated by 2.8% from 2017 to 2018. Among continents, European countries generated over half of worldwide wheat exports during 2018 with shipments amounting to $21.5 billion or 53.7% of the global total. Home to two leading wheat-shipping nations (Canada and United States), North America furnished 28.4%. From the Oceania continent, Australia was responsible for 7.7% of international sales for wheat. Smaller percentages came from Latin America (6.6%) excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean, Asia (3.5%) then highly populated Africa (0.1%). For research purposes, the 4-digit Harmonized Tariff System code prefix for wheat and meslin is 1001. Below are the 15 countries that exported the highest dollar value worth of wheat during 2018.



  • Russia: US$8.4 billion (21.1% of total wheat exports)

  • Canada: $5.7 billion (14.2%)

  • United States: $5.4 billion (13.6%)

  • France: $4.1 billion (10.3%)

  • Australia: $3.1 billion (7.7%)

  • Argentina: $2.5 billion (6.2%)

  • Ukraine: $2.4 billion (5.9%)

  • Romania: $1.2 billion (3.1%)

  • Germany: $1.2 billion (2.9%)

  • Kazakhstan: $965.4 million (2.4%)

  • Bulgaria: $851.8 million (2.1%)

  • Hungary: $429.6 million (1.1%)

  • Poland: $403.4 million (1%)

  • Lithuania: $376.8 million (0.9%)

  • Pakistan: $322.4 million (0.8%)


The listed 15 countries shipped 93.3% of global wheat exports in 2018 by value. Among the above countries, the fastest-growing wheat exporters since 2014 were: Pakistan (up 3,853%), Argentina (up 312.4%), Russia (up 55.5%) and Bulgaria (up 24.4%). Those countries that posted declines in their exported wheat sales were led by: Germany (down -62.2%), Poland (down -50.6%), Australia (down -42.3%), Lithuania (down -41.7%) and United States (down -30.1%).
